NNPC Chief Says AKK Gas Pipeline Will Come Online in 2023

Monday, April 18, 2022

Speaking during a construction site visit last week, NNPC Group Managing Director Mele Kyari stated that Nigeria’s 614 km Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) natural gas pipeline is on target to begin operations in 2023, bringing a new source for power generation online.

“Power generation will improve; industries will spring up nationwide. This is one major project that’ll bring development and progress to this country. We’ll deliver it by 1st Quarter 2023,” Kyari said.

The pipeline, which will traverse Ajaokuta, Kaduna, and Kano, began construction in June 2020, and will generate 3.6 GW of power to the communities along its route.

Seeing as the pipeline is a pet project of President Muhammadu Buhari, Kyari assured the pipeline would come online before his term ends. “We will put gas on this line before the President leaves office. Power will be stabilized, industries will come up as a result of this project,” Kyari reiterated to reporters.
