Northern Nigerian States Join Forces

Northern Nigeria is set to see expedited oil and gas production in the region. The West African country’s northern states of Bauchi, Benue, Borno, and Niger states plan to form the Inland Hydrocarbon Basins Exploration Association.

Commissioner for Mineral Development in Niger state Jibreel Abubakar said after a meeting of the state standing committee to fast track exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbon deposits in the Bida Basin, the need to have a common front with other basins in the north was to encourage the federal government and other agencies to speed up efforts in the exploration process.

Efforts made so far on findings at Bida Basin indicate that the prospects of large commercial deposit of hydrocarbons in the basin where the source rocks have been discovered. Based on preliminary findings there is 30% oil and 70% gas deposit in the basin from the source rock.

The source rock was analyzed after two wells were drilled in the Agaie and Kudu areas of the Niger state. The committee plans to undertake aero magnetic geological mapping over the deposits.

Aside from collaborating with other states in the region, there will also be an international workshop to ensure that investors are encouraged to invest in the exploration process in the Bida Basin.
