Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that the country’s desire to achieve 10,000MW of electricity generation is attainable going by the level of both private and government investment over the past eight years.
Obasanjo, at the ground breaking ceremony of NNPCChevron’s Joint Venture Agura Power Generation Project, assured that the nation’s total generation capacity would soon hit 10,000MW given increased private participation in the sector.
Presently construction work is ongoing at an additional four power stations in the country. Two of the commissioned plants are being constructed in Gergu, Kogi state, and Omotosho in Ondo state. A plant in Olorunsogo[Papanlanto]in Ogun state is nearing completion while Alaoji in Abia state will be operational early next year.
On completion, these new power stations are expected to add about 1600MW of new capacity into the national grid.
”Indeed, it is satisfying to note that investors like Chevron Nigeria Ltd. and others in the oil and gas sector are positively responding and assisting ongoing power reform by the present administration. And as we drive the NNPCChevron Power generation project forward, I am positive that the prospective economic benefits it will bring to our economy would be very significant.”
The President however, asked stakeholders in the oil and gas industry to complement the efforts of Federal Government to boost electricity efficiency in the country.
The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation [NNPC], Funsho Kupolokun, said the project would generate about 750 jobs for Nigerians at the construction stage.
He said site preparation has commenced for the project even as he explained that same will be completed in record time.
The Managing Director of Chevron Nigeria Limited, Mr Fred Nelson noted that the project underscores his company’s commitment to assisting in the economic and social growth of the country in which it operates.
The plant, scheduled to be commissioned in the fourth quarter of 2010, will generate between 400-500MW of electricity with gas supplied from the NNPCChevron JV through the Nigerian Gas Company.
