Oil Firms Pull Staff Out of Egypt

Monday, July 8, 2013

The ongoing clashes in Egypt have led to firms pulling some of their staff out of the country. According to reports, UK-based firms BG Group and BP have pulled a number of their staff out of the country. BP said it had withdrawn about 60 people, leaving only 40 essential expat workers in the country and BG Group withdrew about 100 people.

Both companies said all their staff were safe and their operations in the country continued unaffected.

KNOC subsidiary Dana Petroleum has also evacuated some of its personnel from the country. In addition, there have been unconfirmed reports that other companies are sending non-essential personnel out of the country and Shell said it is watching the situation carefully.

BP said: “As a precautionary measure, we will be withdrawing a number of non-essential expatriate staff, contractors and families on a temporary basis. Around 40 essential expatriate staff remain and our office in Cairo is open. We do not expect any impact on production from our joint venture operations. BP remains fully committed to Egypt and intends to return staff as soon as possible.”  BP may be taking the situation a bit more seriously as it recently lost a number of staff in Algeria when its In Amenas gas facility was attacked.

A spokesman for BG Group said: “Safety and security of our people is paramount. Everyone is safe and accounted for. Operations continue unaffected by events. We are monitoring the situation very closely.”

Since the ouster of the country’s president, Mohammed Morsi dozens of Egyptians have been killed in clashes between the president’s supporters and the opposition.  Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in Cairo and there have been fatal clashes in other cities such as Alexandria.
