Loyalists to deposed South Sudan’s Vice President Riek Machar claim that they have taken Unity state, planning a partial shutdown of oil producing facilities in the state. General James Kong Chol has claimed responsibility while admitting allegiance to the ousted vice president.
This marks the second state to fall to rebel forces after President Salva Kiir’s administration lost control over the capital of Jonglei state to a group led by General Peter Gatdet Yak on December 18. Kirr fired Machar and the rest of his cabinet in July flaring tensions throughout the newly-formed nation.
South Sudan’s Upper Nile state, also oil producing, is facing mounting tensions after unidentified gunmen attacked government security forces, according to the national army spokesman in an interview to Al Jazeera.
