An oil tanker explosion in South Sudan has left more than 170 people dead. According to officials the tanker veered off the road and residents were siphoning fuel from the truck when it exploded.

At least 50 people are reported to have been injured.

The tanker was coming from the South Sudan capital of Juba and was in the Western Equatoria state near Maridi when it ran off the road and overturned.

Maradi county commissioner Wilson Thomas Yanga told the BBC that while the driver went to the nearest town to get help, local residents had descended on the tanker to collect some of the petrol it contained.
