One Port Opens as Another Closes In Eastern Libya

Monday, December 15, 2014

Libya’s eastern Hariga oil port and its connected fields are working normally according to the state run operator Arabian Gulf Oil Co. “Hariga port and all our fields are working normally,” said a spokesman for the company. A tanker was scheduled to lift oil from the terminal on December 14.

While this is good news out of Libya, it is a bit overshadowed by the fact that the country’s largest port in the east, Ed Sider, was shut in due to fighting nearby between forces representing the country’s competing governments. The area around the port was bombarded with air strikes on December 13 by forces loyal to Libya’s recognized government. The air strike was aimed at stopping an advance of troops led by the rival administration.

According to a Reuters report, the Ras Lanuf port east of Es Sider was still operating but the Waha Oil Co running the Es Sider port had halted work as all staff had left the site for security reasons.
