Petroci Workers Launch Strike

Wednesday, February 3, 2016

A 72-hour strike was launched in Cote d’Ivoire by employees of the country’s state oil company Petroci. The employees launched the strike in protest of the layoffs the company has had to make in light of the current global crude crisis.

Petroci had to let go 50 of its 600 employees in January and the company is expected to triple that number in the coming months. Union leaders are threatening to broaden the walkout to other firms if demands are not met.

“Our employer violated all the rules and refuses to agree to the workers’ demands. We have in front of us an employer that doesn’t respect anything,” said Jeremie N’Guessan Wondje, a Petroci employee and secretary general of the SYNTEPCI union, quoted in a Reuters report.
