Petronas Refutes Stories of Mauritania Exit

Sunday, October 11, 2015

Despite reports to the contrary, Malaysian state-run oil firm Petronas is not exiting some of its assets in Africa. After media reports claimed the company was pulling out of Mauritania the company said it was still operating in the country.

“In the event that Petronas intends to close our operations in the country, it will be in strict compliance with our legal commitments and is subject to customary conditions including the necessary approvals from relevant authorities,” Wee YiawHin, Petronas’ CEO for upstream, was quoted as saying in a Reuters report.

Late last year the company had revealed that it was not opposed to selling assets in Africa, if the growth prospects were limited, specifically Mauritania and Cameroon.

In Mauritania the company holds one producing asset and in Cameroon Petronas has several gas assets.
