Ping Declares Himself President

Sunday, September 4, 2016

The political crisis continues in Gabon following the West African country’s presidential elections that led to two days of violence. The latest report has Gabonese opposition candidate Jean Ping declaring himself president after the country’s electoral commission named incumbent Ali Bongo the winner.

Gabonese cities, specifically Libreville and Port Gentil, erupted in violent clashes between pro-Ping demonstrators and the police after Bongo was announced the winner of the election. Ping says the poll on Saturday was a sham.

“I am the president,” Ping told a news conference. “The whole world knows who is the president of the republic: it’s me, Jean Ping,” he said. “Our country is moving toward chaos … Peace can only occur if the truth of the ballot box is restored and respected.”

Five people died and over 1,000 were arrested in the unrest following the election results announcement.
