Tuesday, November 5, 2019

Pirates have struck once again in the Gulf of Guinea, in two separate incidents over the last few days. Four crew members were taken hostage from a Greek oil tanker after pirates boarded the vessel off the coast of Togo on Monday morning. Two of the crew were Philippine nationals, one Greek and one Georgian, according to the Togolese navy. One security guard was also shot and wounded in the attack.

In a separate incident on Saturday, eight people were kidnapped from a Norwegian cargo vessel off the coast of neighboring Benin. Nine Filipino crew members were taken hostage in this incident.

Efforts are underway by all relevant parties to secure the safe release of all of the hostages.
