Polish Refiner Turns to Nigeria

Monday, October 15, 2018

In an effort to lessen its dependence on Russian crude, Polish oil refiner, PKN Orlen, has chosen to source crude oil from the Nigerian market. The refiner is expecting its first delivery of crude from Nigeria in a matter of days.

“Nigeria is our new source of supply. Currently, a cargo of 130,000 tons of Nigerian oil is enroute to Poland. It should arrive at Naftoport (in Gdansk) in mid-October,” said Daniel Obajtek, general manager of PKN, in an interview with the Polish press.

PKN imported 90% of its crude from Russia in 2015, but that number has dropped over the past few years to 70%. The refiner is looking to drop this figure even lower and Nigeria could play a big role in its plans.

“If the tests confirm the strength of yields and margins, other supplies of Nigerian oil will be a viable option,” said Obajtek.
