Port of Benghazi Re-opens After Three-Year Shut in

Tuesday, October 3, 2017

Libya’s commercial port at Benghazi has been officially reopened according to reports out of the beleaguered North African country. The port had been closed for three years due to fighting between rival factions in Eastern Libya.
Abdullah al-Thinni, prime minister of the government based in the eastern city of Tobruk, marked the occasion by arriving at the port on board a tanker.
“Today Benghazi port opened and a tanker from Tobruk entered as a message to the world that the port is safe and we are ready to receive tankers,” Reuters cited port manager Abdulazim Al-Abbaras saying by telephone. “Until now we have not received notification of tankers arriving for exports and imports – for now we are starting up and waiting.”
