Rallies in Algeria

Monday, April 4, 2016

Algerian president, Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s ruling party, the FLN, held a rally to support the regime as political tensions in the country between the FLN and opposition groups rise. FLN party chief Amar Saadani called for a front united behind President Bouteflika and the Algerian army to be mobilized to defend the borders of the country.

The government is under pressure in light of threats of Islamic extremist violence and low oil prices and it has called for economic alternatives to help alleviate the difficulty that having the petroleum sector as its main revenue generator has put on the country

While the FLN was holding its rally, opposition members were holding their own, calling for early elections and peaceful demonstrations around the country.
