Rebels Seize Refinery in South Sudan

Wednesday, May 20, 2015

According to reports, rebels in South Sudan have captured a refinery near a major oilfield in Upper Nile State, where fighting has once again flared up. The rebels told the firms in the Upper Nile State to shut down operations and leave.  No government official was immediately available to comment.

A Reuters report cited SPLA rebel spokesman, James Dak, as saying that the rebels were still fighting government troops in the area that is home to country’s largest oilfield, Paloch. “This is a matter of urgency! This is due to the ongoing clashes between our forces and pro-SalvaKiir troops near the oilfields,” he said, referring to the country’s president.

Forces loyal to Kiir and rebels allied with his former vice president, RiekMachar, have been fighting for nearly 18 months. More than one cease fire has been reached but any lasting truce has been elusive.
