Refiners Prepare for Strike in South Africa

Thursday, July 28, 2016

With a planned strike on the horizon in South Africa, the country’s refiners are making contingency plans to secure supplies. The strike is set to start July 28.

The workers from the Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood and Allied Workers Union (CEPPWAWU) are striking over wages. According to the country’s National Petroleum Employer’s Association (NPEA), its wage increase offer was “reasonable” given the economy, but the union turned it down.

Besides refiners making preparations, petrochemical firm Sasol said it has made arrangements to ensure minimal disruptions to customers ahead of a worker’s strike.
