Renamo Resilient Over Negotiations Despite Death

Wednesday, October 12, 2016

Even with the assassination of one of its negotiators, Jeremias Pondeco, Mozambique’s opposition party Renamo said it will not abandon talks with the government. Pondeca was a member of the Joint Commission charged with finding ways to overcome a standoff between Renamo and the government. He was assassinated days before the joint commission was to resume talks.

According to Renamo’s national spokesperson, Antonio Muchanga, the negotiations will go on. Muchanga was quoted by state news agency AIM as saying “Renamo will continue the negotiations. Even today, if the Joint Commission was in session, Renamo would be willing to take part in the negotiations.”

“This barbaric act, committed by the enemies of democracy and of the well-being of the Mozambican people, is intended to force Renamo to abandon the dialogue,” he added.

The talks were meant to resume on October 9 but will now be delayed until October 18.
