The Niger Delta has been the site of a number of kidnapping incidents over the past week or so. Gunmen killed a German man and kidnapped a second in southwest Nigeria. Another German national was kidnapped in northern Nigeria, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier told a news conference in Abuja.
It was also reported by the military that pirates hijacked a police gunboat and killed four officers. The gunboat was escorting a barge-load of oil for Agip in the southern Niger Delta. “Four policemen who were escorting a boat were attacked and killed. Six oil workers were abducted in the incident,” said Mustapha Anka, spokesman for the military’s Joint Task Force in the region.
