Rwanda and BGP Fail to Reach Agreement

Tuesday, January 17, 2017

Rwanda’s nascent oil exploration has floundered a bit after negotiations with Chinese firm BGP came to an end without a firm deal in place. BGP won a tender in May to explore for crude in Rwanda’s Lake Kivu.

While a draft contract has been adopted by both the government and BGP, no final version could be agreed upon.

The EastAfrican reported taht the Minister of Natural Resources, Vincent Biruta, declined to explain why the negotiations collapsed, there is however still a tender process taking place according to the Minister.

“I cannot interfere in the process or comment on companies that bid to explore oil. We will wait for the procurement process to be concluded and know who is selected. The company selected will then sign a contract; but until then I cannot comment,”Biruta said.
