Rwandan president Paul Kagame is expected to win by a landslide in parliamentary elections as the country’s National Election Commission said that the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) scored 76% of the vote with 75% of the ballots counted. The RPF has ruled for nearly 20 years since ending the genocide in 1994, with analysts suggesting that the party had no real competition.
The seats up for grabs within parliament total 80 with 53 elected directly while the remaining 27 are reserved for women, youth, and handicapped. Those special seats are indirectly appointed by local and national councils which has given Rwanda the only parliament in the world with the majority of seats taken by females.
