Saipem will appeal a ruling made by an Algerian court that one of its units operating in the country should pay $37,104 in fines for allegedly inflating prices on contracts to build a gas pipeline.
The firm was awarded the contract to build the GK3 pipeline in 2009 by Algeria’s state-run firm Sonatrach. The Algerian court alleges that Saipem inflated prices “on contracts awarded by a public company engaged in industrial and commercial activities, taking advantage of the authority or influence of representatives of said company.”
Saipem said Sonatrach had reserved the right to claim payment of damages it allegedly suffered in a separate civil proceeding, but no such claim had been presented as yet.
Algeria’s state news agency, APS, recently reported that several Sonatrach officials were jailed in conjunction with corruption cases.
