SAPETRO Tags PGS for Juan de Nova Survey

Tuesday, September 24, 2013

South Atlantic Petroleum (SAPETRO) announced the award of a series of six 3D seismic surveys in the central Mozambique Channel to PGS. The 3D survey award follows PGS’ successful acquisition of 12,500 sq km plus 2D broadband seismic and processing work for SAPETRO.

The full program will total more than 9,000 sq km of 3D coverage within the 52,990 sq km Juan de Nova permit in French TAAF (Terres Australes et Antarctiques Françaises) waters and the 13,770 sq km Belo Profond permit in Madagascan waters. The acquisition program is expected to convert a variety of previously imaged large to very large structural and stratigraphic leads, into drillable exploration prospects.

The PGS vessel M/V Ramform Sterling, equipped with 12 solid streamers, is due to begin acquisition this month.

The SAPETRO permits contain a substantial portion of a new deep water exploration province with extensive oil prone source rocks. The permits also have shallower burial depths than the Rovuma Delta Gas Province to the north along the Davie Fracture Zone, the site of the recent ENI and Anadarko discoveries offshore Mozambique. Both areas are in water depths of 1,800 to 3,200 meters.

In total, over 7,000 sq km will be acquired in Juan de Nova and over 2,000 sq km in Belo Profond. Three separate surveys will be conducted in each permit, with two surveys being acquired continuously across the international frontier between the permits.

Commenting, SAPETRO’s CEO Martin Trachsel stated: “Following the promising results of our interpretation works, this is another significant step in exploring these acreages and exhibits our confidence in their prospectivity, particularly for oil. With the portfolio of seismically supported leads and prospects, this 3-D detailing will further de-risk the blocks in preparation for selecting drillable prospects in the very near future.”
