Second Round Needed for STP Elections

Tuesday, July 26, 2016

Voters on the tiny island nation of Sao Tome and Principe will head to the elections polls once again for a second round of voting for the country’s next president. While provisional results had incumbent Manuel Pinto da Costa lagging behind the ex-speaker of parliament Evaristo Carvalho, 24.8% to 50.1% respectively, the supreme court ruled that there would need to be a second round of voting.

According to the supreme court ruling results from one town and the diaspora were not counted and the election commission should have waited for them. When these votes were factored into the count, Carvalho was just under the 50% he needed for an outright win.

The run-off will take place on August 7.
