Seychelles Elections Go to Round Two

Tuesday, December 8, 2015

The Seychelles will see their presidential elections go into a run off as no candidate received the requisite percent of votes for a clear win. According to Hendricl Gappy, chairman of the Seychelles Electoral Commission, the runoff will take place on December 16 as all six candidates in the first round failed to secure 50% of the vote.

The incumbent President James Michel, 71, won 47.76% of the 62,004 votes that were cast, while his closest challenger, Wavel Ramkalawan, a 54-year old Anglican priest, scored 33.93%.

“We will have to go into a second round,” Gappy said.
