Shale Protests Continue in Algeria

Monday, March 16, 2015

Demonstrations against drilling for shale gas in the southern portion of Algeria continued. On March 14 thousands of citizens across the North African nation participated in demonstrations.

Reports from the organizers of the demonstration say more than 1,000 gathered to protest in Ouargla, with another 1,000 demonstrators participating in a separate protest in In Salah according to Algeria’s state news agency APS.

The protests have remained peaceful.

Demonstrations have been ongoing since the beginning of the year in protest against the possible environmental damage related to the exploitation of Algeria’s shale gas reserves.

Algeria’s initial shale gas test wells were drilled in 2014 in Ahnet, near In Salah.
