Shale Protests Continue in Algeria

Tuesday, February 10, 2015

Protests are continuing in Algeria over the country’s potential shale program. The protests began in early-January near the town of In Salah, where Sonatrach drilled its first test well.

Protests soon erupted and have continued despite government promises there would be no harm done to the environmentwith the fraccing process. On January 21, Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal said shale gas drilling would not be the “order of the day” for several more years and the drilling in Ahnet was just for experimental purposes.

On February 8 however Sonatrach’schief said more wells were planned and the company would not halt operations. “Sonatrach in a few days will start drilling a second pilot well for shale gas at Ahnet after the first one in the same basin,” said SaidSahnoun. “Calling for the end of shale gas exploration would be calling for the end of oil exploration in Algeria.”
