Nigeria saw one of its damaged pipelines reopened late last week when Shell turned the tap back on at its Trans Niger Pipeline (TNP) after repairing a valve point and removing oil theft connections. The TNP had been closed since June 20 after an explosion and fire at a point of theft, deferring 150,000 bpd.
“Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria has repaired the valve point and removed six other crude oil theft connections,” the company said in a statement.
While Shell says all is good to go a local environmental NGO said an estimated 6,000 barrels of oil had been spilt. In a statement, the Stakeholder Democracy Network (SDN), a local NGO, said 6,000 barrels of oil had been spilt.
Shell’s statement said only that there had been a “residual leak,” but did say clean up would be carried out in due course.
