Shell Spuds Graff-1 Offshore Namibia

Tuesday, December 14, 2021

Shell has spud the Graff-1 exploration well, offshore Namibia in Block 2913A. The well is located in the Orange Basin at a water depth of about 2,000 meters. The well is being drilled with the Valaris DS-10 which is under contract through January 2022.

Shell is the operator of Block 2913A and is partnered with QatarEnergy and state oil firm Namcor.

With the Graff-1, two high-value wells have spud offshore Namibia in recent weeks with the Venus-1X offshore exploration well in Block 2913B (PEL 56) spudding first by TotalEnergies and partners.

Commenting on the two recent spuds by the supermajors, Barry Rushworth, Technical Director of Australian junior explorer Pancontinental Energy, which holds the on-trend PEL 87 license, said: “These wells are recognized worldwide as two of the most important oil exploration wells of the year. Total’s Venus-1 well spudded recently, and now Shell has started its Graff-1 well. Pancontinental’s Saturn turbidite complex is geologically similar in many ways, particularly to the Venus Prospect.”

“These turbidite plays are like very large oil fields elsewhere in Africa, triggering significant interest in offshore Namibia from major oil companies and Africa specialists. In this prime region, drilling success could open up a complete new African oil play,” he continued.
