Six Dead in Cairo Bombing

Sunday, December 11, 2016

Six policemen died and three others were injured in a bomb blast on December 9 in Cairo. The explosion took place on a main thoroughfare going to the Giza pyramids.

Egypt’s state-run news agency, MENA, reported that the blast occurred on al-Haram Street and targeted police.

Egypt’s Interior Ministry said in a statement that the bombing took place near “two security points” and that security forces were deployed at the scene after the incident. It said three of those killed were officers.

The Hasm movement claimed responsibility for the attack. The Hasm movement arrived on the militant scene in Egypt earlier this year and is said to be aligned with the Muslim Brotherhood.

The group has said it seeks retribution for the military overthrow of the Morsi government and the violent crackdown that followed. A statement by the group said “the blood of the martyrs will not go in vain, but rather this blood is the fuel to our revolution and a light that leads our resistance.”

The bombing follows the death of three Hasm members by security forces just days earlier.
