Somalia to Investigate Corruption Claims

Thursday, September 10, 2015

The government of Somalia is investigating allegations related to Soma Oil & Gas according to the country’s Foreign Minister Abdusalam Omer. Soma is being investigated for fraud by the UK’s Serious Fraud Office (SFO).

The SFO launched its investigation into Soma at the end of July. Soma issued a statement saying it was “confident that there is no basis to the allegation.” The SFO investigation was triggered by a UN probe; as with the investigation by the SFO, Soma refutes the claims by the UN and even published an open letter on its website proclaiming its innocence.

In Somalia, Omer was quoted by Reuters as saying, “The Somali government is investigating if there is any truth or reality to what Soma Oil has been accused of. An investigation will be concluded in a timely manner.” He did not offer details on the charges.
