The dispute over the maritime boundary between Kenya and Somalia is moving forward at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague. The court agreed on February 2 to hear Somalia’s case against neighboring Kenya.
The case may very well determine who holds the potential oil and gas resources in the Indian Ocean. Somalia would like to redraw the maritime border between the two countries, which could see at least three of Kenya’s 20 offshore blocks being affected.
Kenya has argued that the IJC has no jurisdiction over the case but the court rejected Kenya’s objection.
ICJ president Ronny Abraham said, “In the light of the foregoing, the court finds that (Kenya’s) preliminary objection to the admissibility of Somalia’s application must therefore be rejected,” Abraham told a hearing at the ICJ’s headquarters.
