Algeria’s state-owned oil and gas company, Sonatrach, and the National Center for Cleaner Production Technologies (CNTPP) signed a framework cooperation agreement on Tuesday in Algiers, aimed at consolidating their efforts in environmental and technology management.
For an initial duration of three years, the framework agreement provides for three areas of partnership between the two parties, namely: training and capacity building, management of special and hazardous waste, as well as technical assistance and support. It will thus make it possible to strengthen cooperation between the energy and mining sector and that of the environment, in terms of environmental protection and the preservation of wealth.
The agreement was signed by the Central Director of HSE (Health, Safety and Environment) of Sonatrach, Abdelkrim Ouamer, and the CEO of the CNTTP, Abdelkader Fergui.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ouamer affirmed that this framework agreement is in line with the new HSE policy of Sonatrach signed by its CEO last March, making the environmental dimension a “priority” for the company. It is also “in line with the environmental objectives of the company for the period 2022-2026,” he said.
This partnership, he explains, aims to strengthen the capacities of company executives responsible for monitoring, reporting and verifying environmental aspects at site level, as well as supporting Sonatrach for improving its environmental performance.
It will also allow Sonatrach to enhance the efforts it provides in the field of environmental protection and to create a bridge with international institutions thanks to the status of “focal point” of the CNTPP with these institutions, making of this “win-win” partnership, said Mr. Ouamer.
For his part, Mr. Fergui indicated that the CNTPP, in its capacity as Regional Center for the Stockholm Convention, “could duplicate this experience in the countries of the region”, as well as “benefit from the experience of Sonatrach in environmental protection.”
Stating that more than 200 Sonatrach executives should benefit from capacity building, through thematic workshops linked to each branch of activity and each group unit, the manager revealed that the company will also benefit, in the under the Stockholm Convention, a pilot waste disposal operation, according to international standards.
The framework agreement, coming in application of the instructions of the Minister of the Environment aimed at supporting industrial companies, according to Mr. Fergui, will also make it possible to establish a manual specific to Sonatrach in terms of environmental management. It will also make it possible to highlight the efforts made by Sonatrach to “resolve environmental problems and face the current challenges linked to climate change,” he stated.
