Sonatrach Unit Orders LNG Tankers

Friday, October 24, 2014

A subsidiary of Algeria’s state-run oil and gas firm Sonatrach, Hyproc, has ordered two new LNG tankers with an option for a third. The contract for the tankers went out to Itochu Corp. and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI). Itochu provided assistance up to the signing of the contract and will support implementation until handover of the vessels.

The signing ceremony took place in Oran on October 15 between the representatives of Hyproc, Itochu, and HHI. There were also representatives from Algeria’s Ministry of Mines and Energy as well as the Ministry of Transportation.

The newly built LNG tankers will be of the 170,000 cubic meter class, and will be very-latest-designed vessels that apply dual-fuel diesel-electric (DFDE) systems. The vessels are scheduled for completion from the end of 2016 to the first half of 2017.

Itochu to date jointly owns and operates three LNG tankers with Sonatrach, Hyproc, and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines.
