Sontrach’s Kaddour Wooing Local Leaders

Monday, May 28, 2018

The CEO of Sonatrach, Algeria’s state-owned oil and gas company, Abdelmoumen Ould Kaddour has been making the rounds in the southern portion of the country trying to drum up support for shale drilling in the region.

According to a Reuters report, Kaddour visited three Sufi Muslim institutions near the In Salah gas field to obtain the local people’s consent for the development of its shale projects.

The people in the region have been against letting international companies explore shale gas, deeming it as “too risky and damaging” for the environment. Demonstrations then led to the suspension of exploration work.

Kaddour told the religious leaders that the exploitation of shale gas would bring $67 billion in additional revenue by 2030, of which 50% will be reinvested.
