The accord signed between Iran and a number nations, including the US, could reopen an old crude import market for South Africa. According to the country’s International Relations and Cooperation Minister, Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, a reopening of the Iranian market would bring renewed ties with a nation that was once its biggest supplier.
“If sanctions are lifted on oil imports, that’s a win-win situation and we would like to benefit from that,” Nkoana-Mashabane said.
South Africa called an end to oil imports in 2012 when trade restrictions were imposed on Iran by the US and other western nations, turning to Saudi Arabia to meet its crude imports needs.
