South Africa ended a long drought in its power sector with the opening of the Medupi power plant. The country’s president, Jacob Zuma, opened South Africa’s first new power plant in two decades on August 30.
The plant was a long time in coming, having started construction in 2007. The Medupi plant, located near Lephalale, was plagued by strikes over the construction of the facility.
The Medupi will add 4,764 MW of power to South Africa’s significantly constrained power generation capacity, once it is fully up and running. Currently only the first 794 MW of power generation capacity are online.
“Shortage of energy does not only cause enormous inconvenience, it is a serious impediment to economic growth. Today, I am here to say, there is light,” Zuma said at the opening of the plant.
The plant is expected to be fully operational by H1 2019.
