The government of South Africa’s draft Gas Utilization Master Plan (Gump) is expected to be released to the public in June if the country’s new Cabinet signs off on it soon. Department of Energy (DoE) director general Ompi Aphane said the government sees a “massive upside potential” for gas and believes that the resources’ potential should not be confined to electricity generation.
South Africa currently is in the midst of updating its Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) as well as the gas master plan and reports say there will be “line of sight” between the two for electricity. The draft update includes a “Big Gas” scenario that envisages 67 GW of installed gas generation by the year 2050 and the Gump itself considers several options for supplies including imports from neighboring Mozambique and Namibia. The government is also looking to exploit shale gas and CBM on the domestic front for supplies.
Gump will be aligned with the government’s Integrated Energy Plan, which is waiting to be finalized, the IRP, and a Liquid Fuels Master Plan which is still at an early stage of drafting. Some industry insiders are not optimistic on the speed in which these drafts will be released for public consultation or even if they will be effective once given the green light.
