Peace talks between President Salva Kiir and former Vice President-turned-rebel Reik Machar ended March 6 with no resolution. No further talks have been scheduled.
The two met in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia during March to try and put an end to the over 14-month conflict that began after Kiir sacked Machar in December 2013. Fighting has been ongoing since resulting in the loss of an estimated 100,000 lives and 1.5 million people displaced.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn issued a statement saying he “regretted the talks did not produce the necessary breakthrough…The consequences of inaction are the continued suffering of you, the people of South Sudan, and the prolonging of a senseless war in your country,” the statement said. “This is unacceptable, both morally and politically.”
