According to South Sudan’s petroleum minister, Stephen Dhieu Dau, the country’s oil production saw a small increase. Dau said production is now sitting at 169,000 bpd, up 9,000 bpd from December’s flows.
Fighting between government troops and those troops loyal to former VP Riek Machar has led to damages at some oil facilities which as contributed to the drop in production. Besides the fighting, output at fields that are still up and running are declining due to the lack of spare parts.
“We (were) producing at the average of 160,000 bpd but it has been increased now from the beginning of this year. It has gotten to 168,000 to 169,000 bpd,”Dau told reporters. He said all the production was taking place in Upper Nile State but did not elaborate why production was rising, although last year South Sudan’s former nemesis to the north, Sudan, was expected to send equipment and engineers to help get production back on fields in the Upper Nile and Unity states.
