South Sudan Takes a Step Toward Unity

Sunday, January 10, 2016

A step forward in the bid for South Sudan to form a unity government has been taken with both sides agreeing to share ministerial positions in a transitional government of national unity. Salva Kiir, president of South Sudan, and rebel leader and former vice president Riek Machar agreed to the sharing of ministerial posts on January 7. Other, smaller groups will participate in filling ministerial posts also.

The two sides signed a deal in August 2015 to form a transitional government that will rule for a 30-month period after which elections will be held.

Kiir’s government will nominate 16 ministers, Machar will nominate 10 ministers and smaller parties will have four ministerial positions to fill. Kiir’s posts will include nominations for finance, defense and justice, while Machar’s SPLM/A nominations will include posts for petroleum and interior. The smaller parties will be putting up nominations for posts that include the foreign affairs ministry and the cabinet affairs ministry.
