Organised by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), the SPE International Heavy Oil Conference and Exhibition, now in its second year, will take place 8–10 December 2014 in Kuwait. Held under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Ali Saleh Al-Omair, Minister of Oil and Minister of State for National Assembly Affairs, State of Kuwait, the event will focus exclusively on heavy oil, covering the entire range of important upstream to downstream topics.
The opening ceremony will feature keynote addresses by H.E. Dr. Ali Saleh Al-Omair, Emad Mahmoud Sultan, Deputy CEO, North Kuwait, Kuwait Oil Company, and Nathan Meehan 2016 President, Society of Petroleum Engineers. The executive plenary session entitled “Heavy Oil Innovations Beyond Limitations” will focus on the wealth of innovations in key areas which have enabled the industry to achieve significant improvements in the economics of heavy oil production, and operate at higher levels of efficiency in an environmentally-friendly manner.
The first panel session, Heavy Oil: Challenges, Learnings, and Opportunities, will feature discussions about identifying and selecting the best opportunities and applying the right enhanced oil recovery technologies at the very early stages of the field life cycle. The second panel session, Heavy Oil: The Cutting Edge of New Technology and Bridging the Gap, will analyse the industry’s progress in bridging the gap with new emerging technologies, the overall impact of these new technologies in the business value chain, and the strategies to effectively manage the people who will be using these technologies.
The Kuwait Project Session, entitled “Heavy Oil Development in Kuwait” will feature important heavy oil resources and projects in Kuwait. These projects are destined to become world-class projects of EOR development that would support the 2030 vision of the country.
Apart from the plenary, panel, and special sessions, the event will have ten technical sessions with 30 technical presentations and 27 knowledge-sharing ePoster presentations.
Running alongside the conference, the 1,200 sq. m. Exhibition will showcase the latest technologies, equipment, and solutions for heavy oil challenges from reservoir characterization to hydrocarbon processing.
International exhibitors will demonstrate their advanced innovations in developing heavy oil assets, optimising production and increasing the value as well as the return on investment.
The exhibition is free-to-attend and will provide an excellent platform for industry professionals to discuss new opportunities for collaboration with key decision-makers. Visitors will witness technologies offered by leading firms including: Agar Corporation, Al Khorayef, Baker Hughes, Chevron, GlassPoint Solar, Halliburton, Kuwait Drilling Company, Kuwait Oil Company, Khalid Al-Fulaij, Quantum Vortex, Schlumberger, Total, Weatherford, and WorleyParsons.
The event will also feature two training courses, An Overview of Heavy Oil Recovery, and, Heavy Oil Upgrading, which will take place on 7 December 2014, to give interested oil and gas professionals the opportunity to participate in them before the conference and exhibition begin the next day. Education Day, an initiative to introduce Grade 10 to Grade 12 high-school students to the petroleum engineering discipline, and the industry, in general, will also take place on 7 December 2014. Through the Science Teachers Workshop, taking place on 9 December, SPE will provide participating educators with comprehensive and objective information about the scientific concepts of energy, its importance, and oil and natural gas exploration and production.
