Statoil met with Norwegian police to exchange information regarding payments made to Angola’s state-run firm Sonangol. The payments, made over a four-year period, were funds for the establishment of a research and technology center in the African country.
In a letter published by the Ministry, Statoil said the payments were appropriate and part of the company’s contractual obligation in Angola. “As earlier described, the payments … do not violate relevant anti-corruption legislation. This is not altered by the fact that there is little available information regarding the progress in setting up the research and technology center.”
