South Sudanese rebels have recaptured an oil town in South Sudan. The rebels led by former VP Riek Machar said they have seized the capital of Unity state, Bentiu and have warned oil firms to leave the area within the week.
“The recapturing of Bentiu marks the first phase of liberation of oil fields from (the) anti-democratic and genocidal forces of Kiir,” rebel spokesman Lul Ruai Koang said in a statement. He urged all oil firms, even those in government held areas to shut down operations and send their staffs home.
“Failure to comply with this request, the oil companies risk forced oil shutdown and the safety of their staff.”
An oil ministry official told Reuters on condition of anonymity that three Russian oil workers were injured in a rebel attack at a newly built refinery facility in Bentiu.
Phillip Aguer, the spokesman for the government troops said “There has been serious fighting in Unity today, so far the SPLA (government) forces are still on the ground but we are still waiting for a full report to tell us exactly what has happened.”
While both sides signed a ceasefire agreement in January it has been broken on many occasions and the continuing talks in Ethiopia continue to stall. Negotiations have also been repeatedly postponed, but are reportedly set to resume later this month.
