Nigeria’s Borno state was hit by violence on the evening of June 18. Police reports have five female suicide bombers killing 12 people and wounding 11.
While there was no immediate claim of responsibility, Borno state is the birthplace of the Boko Haram and the use of female bombers in public places is one of the Islamic militant group’s tactics.
Borno state police spokesman Victor Isuku in a Reuters report said the attacks occurred on Sunday at around 8:30 p.m. in the village of Kofa, about five miles from the state capital Maiduguri.
“The first suicide bomber detonated near a mosque, killing seven persons. The second detonated in a house killing five persons,” he said.
