Sunbird Energy Awarded More Exploration Acreage

Friday, October 18, 2013

Sunbird Energy has garnered more exploration acreage in South Africa. The company was granted exploration rights over 747.51 sq km in the Springbok Flats project area by South Africa’s Petroleum regulator, the Petroleum Agency of South Africa (PASA).

MD, Will Barker, said the conversion of the area from an application to exploration license provides contiguous exploration rights over 1,198 sq km of the Springbok Flats Basin and allows the company to target exploration drilling in a highly prospective section of the basin.

The Springbok Flats area is considered favorable for the occurrence of CBM due to the presence of extensive coal deposits at depths suitable for CBM development and preservation. A single coal zone, varying in thickness between three and nine meters, is developed.

Based on an independent expert report, the project – including the newly awarded exploration rights, contains a combined Best Estimate GIP of O.62 Tcf, up to a High Estimate of 1.73 Tcf.

In March 2012 Sunbird applied for additional exploration acreage covering 1,423 sq km contiguous with its existing Springbok Flats licenses. Once granted, the combined Springbok Flats permits will cover 2,621 sq km held by Sunbird (74%) and Umbono (26%).

Sunbird is currently completing its drilling program at the Mopane License area and plans to complete Contingent Resource certification in Q4 2013.
