Another official in Tanzania has been relieved of duty by the country’s president, John Magufuli. The head of the state-owned utility company Tanesco, Felchesmi Mramba, was sacked on January 1.
According a statement from the office of the president, Mramba was fired for approving a power tariff hike of 8.53%. Magufuli rescinded the tariff increase.
“It’s unacceptable that while we are making plans to build manufacturing industries and ensure more citizens have access to electricity…someone else uses his position to increase power tariffs,” Magufuli said in a statement.
Mramba is not the first official to be fired by Magufuli since he took office in October 2015, and he will most likely not be the last. The president has fired dozens of public officials in his bid to root out corruption and government inefficiency.
Magufuli appointed Tito Esau Mwinuka, as acting managing director of Tanesco. Mwinuka is a lecturer at the state-run University of Dar es Salaam.
