Tanzanian and Ugandan energy ministers met in Kampala to finalize negotiations on their joint natural gas pipeline project. At the conclusion of the meeting the ministers agreed to complete and sign a Host Government Agreement for the East Africa crude oil pipeline by the end of June. The pipeline will leave Tanzania’s natural gas fields to provide feedstock to some of Uganda’s thermal power plants.
The negotiations focused on how to manage, execute and supervise the project, taking into account the different laws in both countries. Other issues addressed include registration of participating companies, income distribution, security issues in both countries, and citizen participation in project implementation.
According to National Economic Empowerment Council (NEEC) Executive Secretary Beng’i Issa, the two sides have already reached agreements to ensure that the project creates employment opportunities for people in both countries.
