Over the past decade, Tanzania has more than doubled its access to electricity. According to a statement from the Tanzanian Energy and Minerals Minister, Sospeter Muhongo, access increased from under 30% to over 67% during the last decade.
Tanzania saw access to power in its rural areas jump substantially in 10 years, going from just 2% in 2007 to 47.5% in 2017 and urban areas are 97.3% electrified.
“At 97.3% access in urban areas, Tanzania is among few African countries to record high achievement as per global standards,” the minister said at the groundbreaking ceremony for the $340-million Rusumo Falls Hydroelectric power plant.
