Tanzania is planning to become a power exporter in the coming years according to Minister Energy and Minerals Sospeter Muhongo. The country will supply its neighbors with power starting in 2015 after a gas pipeline is completed, reversing the trend of its importing power.
The pipeline is being funded by a $1.2-billion Chinese loan and is expected to be completed by the end of 2014; boosting Tanzania’s power capacity to 3,000 MW.
“We are on course to start power exports in 2015 because of the surplus electricity that we will be producing after the completion of the ongoing pipeline construction,” Muhongo told reporters following the inspection of a 532-km pipeline.
He said Kenya had made enquiries about importing some 1,000 MW of electricity from Tanzania.
The recent discoveries of natural gas off the country’s coast will give the country gas production once the fields are up and producing. Currently an estimated 43.1 Tcf has been discovered and the government expects that number to increase exponentially in the coming two years.
