Tanzania in Talks with BP and Total

Wednesday, October 29, 2014

According to reports two European heavy hitters are in talks with the Tanzanian government for acreage to explore for oil and gas. France’s Total and the UK’s BP could join other exporters off the East African nation’s coast in the future.

Executives spent some time in Tanzania’s capital of Dar es Salaam with Energy and Minerals Minister Sospeter Muhongo, the ministry said. “Total has expressed interest to explore for gas and oil in the Lake Eyasi (open acreage area),” Muhongo said in a statement. “We welcome competition and we would like many companies to participate in this sector,” he added.

BP also held talks with the minister, although Muhongo did not give details about when those talks were held.
